Challenged Books
Reconsideration of Library Materials
The Marion County Public Library supports the principles of intellectual freedom inherent in the First Amendment of the Constitution of the United States.
Despite the quality of the selection process, occasional objections may arise. If a complaint is made, the following procedures will be followed:
1) The complainant will be informed of the selection and complaint procedures.
2) The complainant must submit a formal “Request for Reconsideration of Library Materials.”
3) Upon completion of the form, the Board of Trustees will take the following steps upon receiving the challenged material:
3a) read, view, or listen to the material in its entirety;
3b) check general acceptance of the material by reading reviews and consulting recommended lists;
3c) determine the extent to which the material meets the criteria for selection;
4) The Board will then make a final decision regarding the challenged material.
